چکیده

[1] It has been recognized that the intensity of the east Asian (EA) summer monsoon has a negative correlation with that of the western North Pacific (WNP) summer monsoon. Here we show that this relationship is much stronger in the recent decade (1994–2004) than in the epoch before 1994 (1979–1993). The first two leading modes of summer-mean precipitation over the large region of the WNP and EA region are shown to be associated with two factors: the ENSO development and the WNP summer monsoon fluctuation. The leading mode has changed from an ENSO-related mode in 1979–1993 to a WNP summer monsoon-related mode in the recent decade (1994–2004). The summer-mean mid-tropospheric geopotential heights that are correlated with the WNP monsoon index also show a marked change in the teleconnection (wave-train) pattern between 1994–2004 and 1979–1993. All together this evidence suggests that the relationship between the EA and the WNP summer monsoons has experienced a significant decadal change around 1993–1994. Citation: Kwon, M., J.-G. Jhun, B. Interdecadal shift in the relationship between the East Asian summer monsoon and the tropical Indian Ocean

In this work, the authors investigate changes in the interannual relationship between the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the tropical Indian Ocean (IO) in the late 1970s. By contrasting the correlations of the EASM index (EASMI) with the summer IO sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) between 1953–1975 and 1978–2000, a pronounced different correlation pattern is found in the tropical IO....

The relative roles of upper and lower tropospheric thermal contrasts and tropical influences in driving Asian summer monsoons

[1] Summer thermal structure and winds over Asia show a larger land-ocean thermal gradient in the upper than in the lower troposphere, implying a bigger role of the upper troposphere in driving the Asian summer monsoon circulation. Using data from atmospheric re-analyses and model simulations, we show that the land-ocean thermal contrast in the mid-upper (200–500 hPa) troposphere (TCupper) cont...

East Asian Monsoon Signals Reflected in Temperature and Precipitation Changes over the Past 300 Years in the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

Based on observational data and Asian monsoon intensity datasets from China, the relationships between the East Asian winter monsoon index and winter temperature, the East Asian summer monsoon index and Meiyu precipitation over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, were analyzed. We found that the monsoon signals were reflected in the temperature and Meiyu precipitation variations....

See–saw relationship of the Holocene East Asian–Australian summer monsoon

The East Asian-Indonesian-Australian summer monsoon (EAIASM) links the Earth's hemispheres and provides a heat source that drives global circulation. At seasonal and inter-seasonal timescales, the summer monsoon of one hemisphere is linked via outflows from the winter monsoon of the opposing hemisphere. Long-term phase relationships between the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and the Indonesia...

A Recent Shift in the Monsoon Centers Associated with the Tropospheric Biennial Oscillation

The tropospheric biennial oscillation (TBO) is conventionally considered to involve transitions between the Indian and Australian summer monsoons and the interactions between these two monsoons and the underlying Indo-Pacific Oceans. Here it is shown that, since the early 1990s, the TBO has evolved to mainly involve the transitions between the western North Pacific (WNP) and Australian monsoons...
